NFPA 10, Requires Fire Extinguishers to be checked at least once a year by a fire protection company. We as a fire protection company make sure the unit is still in proper working order. NFPA 10, also requires typical Fire Extinguishers to be serviced every six years from the date of manufacture & every sixth year after that.
NFPA 72, Requires Fire Alarm Systems to be tested by a fire protection company at a minimum of once a year. Local AHJ may require more frequent testing. Testing consist of checking all devices to ensure proper operation and to make sure monitoring received signals. This insures that fire departments will be notified if in the event of an alarm activation the fire department will respond. Fire Alarms are also required to have sensitivity testing to ensure smoke detectors are activating at the range in accordance to manufacturer.
NFPA 25 & NFPA 13, Sprinklers are required to be tested at least once a year. AHJ may require quarterly testing. Testing consist of checking all devices that tie into the fire alarm system. Devices that send an alarm to the fire alarm system which will than notify the local fire department of a water flow condition and alarm state. Testing also involves checking water pressure & flow pressure. This insures that the sprinkler will have the capabilities to function properly. Sprinklers are also required to have a 5 year internal pipe Inception to insure piping is clear of debris and to insure piping condition in tested areas. Fire department Connection that pipes into the fire sprinkler system is also required to be tested on a 5 year basis. Dry Sprinkler systems are also required to have a 3 year air leakage test to insure that system piping has no major leaking or any loss of pressure on system piping.
NFPA 17, 17A & 96 Require Systems to be tested every 6 months on a semi annual basis. Testing consist of a function test on a manual pull station, link line cut test & link replacement. This insures proper activation on releasing system if ever activated. Testing also insures system piping is clear and free of debris. Proper appliance & gas valve shut down tested as per code requirement.
